History of DKNY

DKNY, (Donna Karan New York), is an international fashion design company founded by award winning designer Donna Karan. Inspired by her daughter Gabby to develop a youth oriented fashion brand for young women and teens, DKNY was first launched in 1989. DKNY’s success was instant and the company became a publicly-traded enterprise in 1996 and later, DKNY was bought by the French luxury brand giant LVMH, Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton - however Donna Karan remains the company design direction. DKNY has its head office at Manhattan, New York and a total of 70 DKNY stores worldwide. DKNY is not just about women’s fashion, but also offer a wide range of products including underwear, baby clothing, footwear, men’s wear and now home products - introducing DKNY bedding.

Donna Karan

Born in Queens, New York in 1949, Donna Karan was born into a fashion oriented family, her mother was a showroom model and her step-father a tailor. She had a passion for fashion sand while at the Parson’s School of Design, she worked for a summer with Anne Klein, and became head of the company in 1974 – as an official successor of the late Klein. A brilliant Anne Klein II was launched in 1982. After 10 long and lovely years at her first and memorable job, Donna Karan just knew what she had to do – build up her very own company, exactly the way she wanted it. And this is where her legacy began. Throughout Donna Karan’s endeavours, she demonstrated her strength and gift for the fashion industry. She knew how to express herself – following her female instincts to seduce all the senses of the women and men worldwide. Donna Karan received not just vocal acknowledgements and tributes, but also life-fulfilling awards including “Superstar Award” and the Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year award. Donna Karan always knew how to extend and reach out other members in the fashion industry, joining organizations and heart-felt foundations such as AIDS awareness and education. Just recently in 2007, Donna Karan launched the Urban Zen Initiative to build up structure for wellness as well as perseverance for the empowerment and golden culture of children.
