Contrary to belief, pioneer ladies were way too busy weaving and sewing clothes, and materials too scarce to make quilts. Only when fabrics were manufactured in the States starting in the late 1750s, did women start really crafting patchwork quilts as we know them. These days, technology has made creating amazing floral quilts and coverlets much easier - the designs are stupendous, and we’d love to show you a few of our favorites. For example, this light and fresh Greenland Home Fashions Barcelona quilt set is one of our newest, in very pretty muted orange and sage green on a white face - a great combination that reverses to solid. It comes with matching shams, and there’s a pretty throw to add as an extra layer. It goes beautifully with antiques, shabby chic and mid century furniture. Blue and white is traditionally a crowd pleaser, and this Laura Ashley Seraphina quilt is no exception. Your country cottage will feel squeaky clean and fresh with this sweet patchwork. Blue flowers and striped panels on the white base bring a welcoming breath of air into your bedroom decor. And, our little secret - there’s a very nice specimen that harkens to a Wedgwood vibe in the clearance department - shh! If you’re done with the blues, and you’re after something in a red floral quilt they also make some lovely floral patchwork quilts. Take this pretty in pink Love Letters set, with roses and hibiscus blooms - very charming and so feminine. As a bit of an escape from the girly prints, we think this Wavery Holi Festival collection, in muted pale blue-green with filgreed interlocking vines and suggestions of flowers is simply divine. It’s subtle and stunning, a classic that will keep its appeal and is available in twin and full sizes for a kids bedroom, as well as queen and king bedding sizes. The contrasting striped bedskirt and throw pillow is fantastic. This one gets a large thumbs-up in the interior design department as it is easy on the eyes and the color is so easy to work with. Hmmm, however...it could be a toss-up between that and the Waverly Chirp bedding. This elegant collection by Historic Charleston brings red and beige to a whole new level. We’re pretty sure those pioneer gals would be surprised to hear a quilt called luxurious. Who knew!
